Correspondence, bills, and miscellaneous papers of Jonathan Brooks of Medford, Mass., and his sons Charles and Samuel R. Brooks. Correspondence includes letters by Jonathan's brothers Samuel, Thomas, William, Simon, and Edward. Later items consist of school papers and letters of Samuel R. Brooks, letters to Charles Brooks, and an essay on the normal school system in America by the latter. There are a few letters addressed to Elizabeth (Albree) Brooks, wife of Jonathan. Some ms. poetry and essays on the threat of war between the U.S. and France (ca. 1798) are also included.

Brooks was a Unitarian clergyman born in Medford, Massachusetts. He received an A.B. from Harvard College in 1816; A.M. 1819. He was the pastor of the 3rd Congregational Church in Hingham (1821-1838) and later professor of Natural History at the University of the City of New York. He was central to the work of establishing normal schools in the United States and is credited with having introduced the term "normal schools" to America.
